In Greek myth, Iris (Ἶρις) is the rainbow personified, messenger to the gods, and the goddess of sky and sea.
And on earth, she is inexpressibly lovely, a genus of 2-300 flowering perennial herbs that grow from rhizomes or bulbs in the temperate zones of Europe, North America, Africa, and Asia. The iris’s drooping sepals are called “falls,” their upright petals “standards;” and many of them grow neon-bright tufts of fuzz called “beards.” This one’s from my front yard:
