Every group creates its own history, its unique iconography.

The stories, graven images, and rituals that make up that history and iconography may seem impenetrable or even bizarre to outsiders. But those cultural accoutrements often come not only to unify the group, but to define it, to symbolize its attendant ideology, and to give shape to its struggle for meaning.

Sometimes a singular object comes to represent that struggle, takes on a life larger than itself, and becomes a symbol, an icon.
